IMO, no discussion of endianality is complete without [Danny Cohen's treatise](https://www.ietf.org/rfc/ien/ien137.txt) on the subject, written 40+ years ago. Do not let the date fool you as to the seriousness of the subject. It is well worth reading for its careful elaboration of the issues.
