CLI .width command lost effect

The .width command suddenly seems to have lost its effect. This is on SQLite 3.34.0. I must have done something wrong, but I haven't got a clue. Any tips?

I use .width daily and it seems to be working fine to me. Why don't you explain what you mean by "lost its effect". Perhaps provide us with an example of the ".width" command you have in mind, together with a succinct description of what it is doing for you and what you think it ought to be doing.

.width works fine, my mistake.
I had it the wrong way around – I thought .width set the column widths. All the data I was looking at so far was such that it made me believe that was the case. Then some new data snuck in that revealed what .width was actually doing and I got all confused.
