Possible sloppy 'obviously' from me. I meant mainland Italy has one exterior ring and two interior rings making up a POLYGON with hole(s). Italy as a jurisdiction, i.e. including Sardinia, Sicily etc. is a MULTIPOLYGON which would include the POLYGONs for Sardinia, Sicily etc - these POLYGONs will each have just ONE 'exteriorring'.
